On 24th January 2017, His Excellency, The President of Republic of Uganda, has commissioned the rehabilitated and extended Ggaba Water Treatment Complex in Kampala. This is the first main achievement of a bigger project named Kampala Water Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation – Phase 1 co-funded together with AFD, EIB, KFW, EU and the Government of Uganda for a total cost of Euros 212 Million. The rehabilitation of the Ggaba Water Treatment Complex will allow National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to provide 50.000m3/day additional water to the South and Western parts of greater Kampala. In the same time, NWSC has invested in over 60 km of secondary and tertiary network development which has contributed to dry zone reduction and new connections. There are already around 500.000 people who have benefited from these first works.

During a joint speech, Mr Kristian SCHMIDT, the EU Ambassador, declared: LV WATSAN project also delivers on a basic human right: Access to safe drinking water. It would be a catastrophic failure of governance and planning, if the inhabitants of Uganda's capital city would suffer water poverty on the shores of Africa's largest freshwater lake.

Mr Peter BLOMEYER, the Ambassador for Germany underlined the fact that Environment, health and growth issues are closely linked, and the key is water and sanitation.

The French Ambassador, Stephanie RIVOAL, concluded by congratulating European companies who had the opportunity to bring their professionalism, expertise and added-value to such an important project. They metNWSC expectations in terms of quality of works but also in terms of professional relationship based on common trust and mutual respect. In fact, works have been conducted by a French contractor, SOGEA-SATOM supervised by a German consultant, CES.

During the Commissioning of Ggaba Water Treatment Complex on Tuesday 24th January 2017, the EU Ambassador, H.E. Kristian Schmidt, the German Ambassador, H.E. Peter Blomeyer, and the French Ambassador, H.E. Stéphanie Rivoal held a joint speech. Please read a full transcript here.
