Deputy Head's Remarks at signing of agreements on Muzizi hydropower project
Honorable Minister, Your Excellency the French Ambassador, AFD Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Bruno Deprince, KfW Country Director, Oliver Jünger, CEO of UEGCL, Harrison Mutikanga, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Energy is a key development factor and a precondition for several essential sectors like health, water supply, transport, telecommunication and others. Therefore Germany attaches great importance to the energy cooperation with African countries.
Also in the development cooperation with Uganda energy is one of the priority areas Germany is focusing on. Our projects concentrate on energy production, access to the energy networks and distribution including the transmission to regional electricity networks.
One of the best examples for our common projects is the Muzizi hydropower project in the West of Uganda, a region where energy needs are particularly strong. It is presently the largest financing contribution of Germany to the Republic of Uganda.
Furthermore Uganda is becoming a model for the cooperation of France and Germany in the energy sector in Africa – with joint cooperation in Hydropower and Transmission Lines.
Muzizi will increase the total power generation capacity in Uganda by about 5% and thus improve the electricity supply of Uganda with cost-efficient and environmentally friendly energy from hydro power. The project will contribute to a sustainable growth pattern for the country and save 123.000 t CO2 emissions by replacing diesel generators.
The project will generate enough electricity to supply about 1 million people in Uganda with clean electricity. This creates an important precondition for rural electrification and economic development in the project area. Even the population not connected to the grid will benefit indirectly from better services of public institutions such as schools and health centers.
Honorable Minister, Ambassador, Ladies and Gentlemen, Let me conclude by thanking the Government of Uganda, the Ministry of Finance, the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited and our French friends for the excellent cooperation. I wish the project a lot of success.
