The Ambassador's Speech at the Peace and Reconciliation Award Ceremony - Élysée Treaty Commemoration

Jan 22, 2017 | German Embassy Kampala
German Ambassador's speech

The German-French reconciliation is the result of an enormous collective effort to overcome the enmity between our peoples passed on by our ancestors. It needed indefinitely more strength and courage to confront the old stereotype bogeymen than to cultivate them. But our example shows that it is possible. We can reject the heritage of our parents and grandparents if it is evil and destructive. (...) We can shake them off and reshape our relationships. And this is a message we deem worthwhile to deliver elsewhere, and this is why we invited you today.

In the kingdom of animals, chimpanzees are considered to be strong, social and intelligent. They are also noisy and belligerent. No doubt, they are our closest relatives. But how much do behavioral and social studies, observations of chimpanzee’s abilities in using tools and calculations of how many of men’s and chimpanzee’s DNA, Y-Chromosomes and amino acids are identical really tell us about similarities and differences of the two species?

Mar 17, 2016 | German Embassy Kampala
Silent Film Screening

Metropolis is a classic. It has preempted all trends and tendencies of the twentieth century: the esthetics of the technical age, the domination of men by machines, the social clivages and the radicalization leading to disaster, the need for mediation and cooperation. It is a science fiction, a horror movie and a love story, and above all an avant garde movie. Nothing much left for following generations of movie makers. If you have seen Metropolis, you have seen them movies all. No, not true, because – Metropolis is only a silent movie.
